Fall is here and the season of cozy blankets, hot cider, crunchy leaves, and crisp weather is making us retreat inside and think about the winter hibernation. Which means pretty soon we’ll be spending a lot more time in our homes and considering all the aspects that haven’t had an upgrade in a while. For this season of change, I would love to share some ways to add something new to the spaces and rooms you love, reinventing the mood and feel, with minimal effort. We’ve already discussed the beauty and impact of painting cabinets, as well as some easy DIYs, but there are so many ways to make a home feel new and refreshed, so I wanted to expand the list a bit. Here are 5 spooky-easy home updates you can do to prepare for the coming months of entertaining and settling in for the winter.
Lighting
Light fixtures easily blend into the background, making them one of the features we may not even notice needs an upgrade. But if there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s that bold, functional, and design-forward lighting makes a huge difference! If you want to throw a little glam into the mix, change the whole ambiance of a room, or just find a way to incorporate lighting that serves you, then this is a great place to start.
One trend I’ve noticed is recessed lighting. I know it’s not very exciting, but recessed lighting is a great asset for aging in place, and is a non-intrusive way to get more light in any room. If you want to go the more captivating route, then there are plenty of amazing vendors to choose from. You can easily work with me to get access to top boutiques, or shop one of my favorite vendors, Lighting New York, for beautiful options.
Seasonal Bedding
It’s such a simple change, but it makes all the difference! Change up the color palette and patterns of your bedding to match the season and create a whole new mood. For fall and winter deeper, cozy, earthy tones create an environment that you just want to curl up in until the frost goes away and the flowers start to bloom again.
Fresh linens are always a welcome change, and as the weather changes you’ll need more blankets, maybe different sheets, and won’t mind more pillows to sink into. You can also update coverlets and shams, and we are even able to make custom bedding just for you!
Or maybe you just want a change in general. I mentioned before how much I love these monogrammed pillow shams (pictured above), and I can’t recommend them enough! This is a great way to add something a little new and different to bedding while incorporating a personalized element.
Update Décor and Art
Though most of your art might be curated and have personal meaning, there’s probably a few purely decorative items that can be changed out—at least for the season. I love hopping onto Minted to browse the new art, or perusing the collection at Leftbank Art (who supplies a lot of the art for our projects). We’ve also been working a lot with Paragon Wall Art. They have lovely pieces and have supplied the art to a lot of our most recent projects!
New Rugs
Rugs add warmth, texture, and either a flash of color or a nice neutral element to balance out the palette. They are a great way to put something new in a room without adding bulky furniture or feeling like you have to completely reimagine the room’s aesthetic. Plus, there are so many options you’ll easily be able to find something that perfectly serves your space. I source a lot of rugs, and am always happy to add this little touch of luxury where I can.
Reupholster Furniture
Reupholstering furniture is not something we immediately think of when we think room updates. Somehow, this practice feels like something from days gone by, but it’s very much so still an option for home upgrades—and it’s amazing! Perfectly good furniture can really show its age when the upholstery becomes faded, frazzled, and thin, but add a new fabric and the whole piece is completely remade. Reupholstering is a great way to revitalize a favorite chair, add bold patterns and textures, and incorporate high performance, or even stain resistant, fabrics.
There are a lot of vendors out there with a huge portfolio of fabric options, and as your collaborative design partner, I can help you find the one that breathes a breath of fresh air into your space.
