What would we do without yearly trends? They are a fantastic jumping off point for an inspired year of design and help us follow the ever-changing, wild, and inventive world of home design. It’s fun to see what’s next and what’s back, which is why we’ve got another collection of contemporary home design trends – 2024 edition. From the unusual and bold to the practical and even the slightly avant-garde, this year’s trends promise lots of color and a chance to embrace our inner wild side.
Dopamine Decor
What makes you happy? That’s the question dopamine decor answers. Embracing color mixing and matching, playful shapes, and whatever sparks joy in your heart, dopamine decor is here to infuse your world with a curated collection of items that are just purely YOU. Pull inspiration from a mood board, your Pinterest saves, or favorite vacation spot. What do you gravitate towards? And what brings a smile to your face?
In practical application, dopamine decor looks a little like walls full of art, brighter colors, funky patterns, and architecturally inspired furnishings. Don’t be afraid to collect and style items that embody who you are and what you love most about the world around you.
Sustainable Spaces
This is an unusual one, but I can’t say I’m surprised this is officially a trend. Reduce, reuse, and recycle have been burned into our brains for decades now, and it’s officially showing up in our home designs! So what does this mean? It means the bits and pieces typically considered waste are repurposed into terrazzo, art, countertops, sinks, hardware, flooring, and more.
Instead of the landfill, it’s combined with like pieces and turned into something completely its own! What’s great about this, too is that it also includes general sustainability – so pieces that are meant to last a long time and age beautifully with use.
Honestly, the possibilities are endless. And the best news for you is that this might mean the most unique design features in your home, created from these throw-away odds and ends, are a little less expensive. So we’re calling sustainable spaces an absolute win!
Colors of the Year
What would a trends blog post be without the colors of the year? This year is looking very earthy-boho-neutral. Sherwin-Williams chose Persimmon – a charming, dusty, peachy pink with rich orange and cream undertones – while Dutch Boy Paints went with a luxurious and moody green called Ironside.
Behr stuck with the moody theme with their Cracked Pepper gray (it would make the most amazing accent wall!), while Valspar went beachy with their Renew Blue, and Glidden gave us a practical, yet still dynamic, neutral in their Limitless ivory.
I’m sold on all of these colors, and can’t wait to use them in projects. Each has its own approach to inspiration, evoking strong emotions through their timelessness and versatility.
