Light, Bright, and Airy: Before & After

bright living room with blue and white carpet, tan sofa, and striped chair. Custom art is propped on the mantle piece.

It all started with a sofa and chair in this Liberty Township Refresh.

This light and airy transformation began when our client had already purchased a sofa and chair from Arhaus. These new pieces were begging for a space that catered to their color, comfort, and quality. When the client came to me, she knew she wanted to incorporate blue and to make good use of the expansive two-story wall that already added a bit of drama and movement to the living room, but didn’t know where to start.

So we set to work, creating a vision board and new layout using our E-Design Software that would help create a cohesive and luxurious living room.

On top of it all, we were also commissioned to transform the kitchen – a space that was a bit weighed down by wood cabinets, dark countertops, and outdated tile. This project took us into two very important rooms in any home, making it vital that we add atmosphere and a sense of “welcome!”.

Before

Both of these rooms have so much potential, but they needed something to break up the darker features – the wood cabinets, dark countertops, darker wall paint, etc. – and add some cohesive style and brightness to them. And making a few simple changes can turn that all around!

The Light, Bright Living Room Re-Do!

Truly a testament to a less-is-more mindset, this living room needed a few easy but impactful changes to make it feel more welcoming. We started by improving the layout to create more balance in the space. We added a beautiful, textured, gray wallpaper that helped add depth. A few custom floating shelves on this wall gave it some character and functionality, while the rest of the walls were treated to a coat or two of Sherwin-Williams’ Gossamer Veil paint.

We then replaced the dark sheer curtains with floor-length custom draperies, added two glass side tables, beautiful art from Leftbank Art and two lamps that incorporated the desired blue hues, some throw pillows, and the pièce de résistance: the ultra-luxurious, yummy, sink-your-toes-into-it area rug. The client was seriously excited for the area rug, and it was another great opportunity to get that blue she wanted into the room!

We created balance by moving the chair from beside the sofa to a corner on the other side, limiting the amount of wood in the room by keeping only the beloved coffee table (a favorite of the client’s husband), and replacing the ceiling fan with a more modern, minimalistic design.

All of these little details lifted the overall feel of the room, allowing the natural light to flood the space and work with the other elements, instead of against. The new sofa and chair were now the glue that held the cohesive space together instead of the odd-men-out in a closed off space.

The Kitchen Refresh

This kitchen was in desperate need of a few contemporary upgrades and it didn’t take much to refresh this kitchen from floor to ceiling. First things first, especially because it requires a small bit of demo, we tore out the thin backsplash tiles that seemed lost amongst the black countertop and lighter wood cabinets. Once that was gone, we chose white subway tile with light grey grout and turned our attention to the cabinets themselves.

One of the easiest ways to make your kitchen look updated is a good coat of paint for the cabinets. So we ordered a custom paint color from Johnson Specialty Painters and banished the wood, introducing a bright gray that offset and complemented the dark countertops. We upgraded the hardware, installed the subway tile backsplash, added a new chandelier light feature, and introduced pops of refreshing color with plants.
