The Many Natural Hues of High Point Market

Exciting things are always happening around here, but one of the most exciting things to happen in April was High Point Market. I talked about this a bit in my newsletter, and I’m sure you all saw the many many many photos I posted on my Insta. But I promised a bit of a recap, so I’m gonna deliver it.

One of the things I love most about High Point is the fact that I get an inside look at trends and curated spaces. So while I want to tell you all about my experience, I really wanted to focus specifically on the many natural hues of High Point Market and the color trends that I can’t wait to use!

Preparing for High Point

In preparation for High Point Market. I assembled swatches, memos, and finishes to take with me so I could source furnishings, art, and accessories for the current projects I’m working on. I also went prepared to sit-test a few sofas and chairs (somebody has to 😉), and source the perfect rugs and art for three projects.

I was also excited about attending a few seminars and meeting other designers who, coincidentally, are also using THE STANDARD process which we have been implementing here at YDP!

In short, I was ready to shop and learn and find amazing pieces for my clients. More than that, though, I wanted to explore the up-and-coming usage of color and the many creative ways neutrals are used in all types of spaces.

The Many Hues of High Point Market

As I’ve mentioned, and as you’ve probably seen in my photos, neutrals are back with a vengeance! And I love it! I’m so in on this trend because the YDP aesthetic loves uncluttered monochromatic spaces that are punctuated with colors, textures, patterns, and unique finds that align with our clients vision and interests. This means that we love a good neutral that allows us to play with other elements and introduce a variety of patterns and textures without creating a busy environment.

Primarily, I noticed a lot of greens, specifically olive green, rich browns, luxurious golds, and easy-going, boho terra cottas. These warm and cozy colors are all perfect for creating comfortable and welcoming spaces. They also pair really well with each other, as well as other colors like dusty blues, cream, soft mustard yellow, rosy pinks, and gemstone purple. And, even better, both metallics and earthy stoneware go really well with these colors, so you can easily create an eclectic environment that collectively speaks your language.

Olive Greens

Olive green, along with forest greens have really been up and coming the last few years. But this year’s High Point Market solidified their prevalence and beauty for me. It’s such a rich and luxurious color. Olive green is moody and mysterious while still being comfortable–a color that we can all identify with in some way because it’s all around us in nature. If you love the vibe of the great outdoors, forests, and greenhouses, olive green (and it’s other green brothers) are right up your alley!

Browns

I think browns get a bad rap for being boring or one dimensional. But let me tell you just how lovely brown can be in your home! Whew, it’s versatile! A cousin to olive and forest greens, brown can add a lot of depth, comes in many many many different hues and is a rich color. Just to name a few shades from Sherwin-Williams, you’ve got Bateau Brown, Mocha, Trusty Tan, Caraïbe, Tea Chest, and Sable. The easiest way to incorporate browns is through wood furnishings, rugs with brown color schemes, linen curtains, brown accent walls, leather, and rugs made from natural materials.

Golds

Who doesn’t love a good gold? I mean, gold is one of those metallics that gently whispers chic, elegant, sophisticated, and clean. Gold also comes in a couple different tones and polishes, so you can really create an atmosphere with it. I like using gold as an accent color and incorporating it through throw pillows, mirror and photo frames, art, and rich yellows in rugs, wallpapers, and curtains. There is so much you can do with this color and metal so I’m excited to bring it to clients’ homes.

Terra Cotta

Famously earthy, terra cotta is a gorgeous color that mixes browns, dusty pinks, and sables to create a completely unique color that is very recognizable. If you love boho styles, Pueblo Revival architecture, more natural vibes, and lots of texture then terra cotta is the way to go. Additionally, there are very few colors that don’t look great next to terra cotta, so you can mix and match to your heart’s content. Terra cotta looks great in vases, frames, stone tabletops, wall paint, accent decor like bowls, bud vases, statues, and more.

Color Palettes

Now, I mentioned that the great things about these colors is that they go with almost everything. But that just makes decorating harder. So, I’d love to get you on the phone to  talk out what you’re looking for and maybe even create some E-design room designs for you!

Or, you can check out some of these awesome resources that I love to use myself.

Sherwin-Williams’ ColorSnap: This online program is free and allows you to not only upload a photo of your room and play with colors on the walls, but gives you complementing colors and lets you build your own palette.

Canva: Canva is a free graphic design website that is user-friendly and allows you to upload your own photos. When you put your photo in a design, Canva will automatically give you colors from that photo that you can then use to create a color palette.

Pinterest: Pinterest’s search bar allows you to type in topics like “flower color palette”. It then gives you photos and user-created color palettes that you can save as inspiration. TIP: Remember to add “with color codes” to make sure you get HEX numbers or other color codes that make it easy to replicate your color palette elsewhere.

As always, I am here to help! If you know you love one of these colors, but just don’t know where to start, I will work with you and your vision to create a home with comfortable, cohesive, and cultural elements unique to you!
