You don’t have to spend a fortune to elevate your home. It’s true! You’ll enjoy these great tips from one of our fav guest writers, Chloe Taylor
Feeling like your home is in need of a makeover? No need for a complete overhaul – these trendy tweaks can jazz up your home in an instance without swapping out everything from top to bottom. Scroll on to get inspired.
Update hardware and fixtures
You might not notice it, but the old hardware and basic, builder-grade fixtures in your home are making it look dated. Replace your lighting fixtures for something new for a quick fix, and make sure you swap out the worn-out plumbing fixtures as well.
Go for a sleek, minimalist design, and consider fixtures in trendy hues such as matte black or brushed nickel to make them stand out even more. Switching your old knobs, handles, and pulls is also going to help breathe new life into your interiors. This is a great budget-friendly option for those who don’t want to spend a lot but still want to make their home look fresh and modern.
Create a focal point
This is probably one of the simplest (and cheapest) ways to refresh a dull space. Every room needs to have at least one focal point – it’s an object or a decor element that draws the eye towards it and stands out. It can be a sculpture, wall art, furniture piece, or even a floral display.
There’s no need for redecorating the entire room, though – keep the rest of the design fairly neutral and let this one decor piece take the spotlight while the other elements support it.
Float your furniture
This is a great way to bring balance into your interiors and make them more open and welcoming. Instead of wasting space by adhering your furnishings to the wall, try to bring them in the middle and ‘float’ them.
The next step would be to anchor your room, and you can do that by introducing a rug, table, and some chairs. If you’ve got a larger room, maybe you’ll need to add some more furnishings to break it up and create additional conversation areas. For that, you can get ready to assemble furniture online – it’s easy to put together, and can easily be dismantled if you’re moving or relocating. Plus, it can easily be moved around when you get bored with the layout, which isn’t the case with larger, bulkier furniture pieces.
Choose a color palette that inspires
Selecting the color palette for your room is what will give your room character and feel, so you want to take some time figuring out what it should be like. The color scheme is that one design element that pulls the room together, and your choice of colors can either make it or break it.
Start by selecting the color you like from pieces like rugs, artwork, or upholstery. Next, look at the color wheel and see how that hue relates to other colors and which ones you can use for your room’s design. Choose the other two colors (secondary and accent color) and then introduce them into the room using the 60-30-10 color rule. As for the accessories, follow the rule of three and group objects by varying their height, colors, and textures.
Introduce some greenery
Indoor plants make for such an easy and inexpensive addition to a home that it’d be a shame to leave those empty corners in your home go unused. Corners, shelves, entrances, or desks – wherever they’re placed, plants take on the role of a decor element, and they’re quite functional accessories as well.
By scrubbing the air of nasty pollutants and VOC compounds (often found in paint), plants detoxify the indoor air and improve its quality, not to mention how they last longer than store-bought, freshly cut flowers. What’s more, you can find a lot of low-maintenance options out there if you don’t have a green thumb. All in all, if you’re looking for a way to instantly boost your interiors, investing in houseplants is a great place to start.
Don’t feel like you need to spend a fortune in order to elevate your home. With a couple of decor tricks up your sleeve, you can easily make some simple, affordable tweaks that will make your home look chic and trendy – in an instant!
