4 Top Interior Design Trends of 2022

It’s 2022 and we all need a bit of a refresh! In 2022 we’re all about finding what serves us and our families, and refreshing a room – especially a bedroom or home office – is the place to start. The 4 top interior design trends of 2022 include nourishing greens, whimsical designs, a fresh perspective on lighting, and modern upgrades. Whether you’re putting on a fresh coat of paint, adding accents, or updating your furniture, there are a number of ways to integrate these 4 top interior trends of 2022 into your home. Today we will unpack 4 trends and follow up with 3 more in the next post.

1. The Healing Power of Color Trend

Soothing Blues

Blue represents calm and relaxation – and who doesn’t need a little bit of both right now? Adding soft shades of blue to rooms designed for relaxation, like your bedroom, is like wrapping yourself in a dreamy blanket.

Nourishing Greens

Bringing a little green into a room – especially a muted, soft green like Sherwin Williams’ Color of the Year, Evergreen Fog – can help turn a room into a relaxing, revitalizing living space. Green is always associated with nature, healing, and nourishment, so it’s the perfect way to change the whole mood of your home.

Uplifting Pastels

Pastel colors magically brighten any space. Their softer hues are calming and gentle, and pair well with lots of natural light. Also, when you start with pastels (like on the walls) you can always introduce darker, complementing hues in your duvets, desks, lamps, and more.

Cozy Browns

Brown, though an underrated color for interiors, tends to creep into rooms in the form of wood floors, door knobs, and accents in rugs. In 2022, though, we’re embracing the brown décor, furniture, and wall colors because it can be so much more!

My favorite way to add it to a room:

No matter how much we love these colors, we still don’t want to go overboard. I love a well-chosen accent wall (if you have a nook or wainscoting, these are great places to add color), or, if you’re not painting, throw pillows, lounge chairs, and lamps are another subtle but impactful way to add a splash of color and wake up the decor in a room.

2. Maximalism, Prints and Whimsy Trend

Maximalism

Feeling overwhelmed already? Don’t worry! There are easy ways to bring these concepts into your home – and still look like you have control over your environment.

Maximalism Trend

Introducing maximalism is an art fully dependent on balance; you do too little and it might feel out of place, but too much will make a space feel crowded (and be a little hard on the eyes).

Prints

We are no longer afraid of elaborate florals, grand damasks, watery moire effects, marbling and folkloric patterns. Embracing these can mean using them as accents, or mixing and matching the patterns and prints for an eclectic display of cozy, modern luxury.

Vintage

Vintage is back and better than ever, both in patterns and general furniture design. Scour the thrift stores or shop some modernized reiterations of classic pieces for unique finds with avant garde silhouettes, and the contemporary flare of the ‘60s and ‘70s.

Whimsy

Whimsy loves the unusual and offbeat. Twisted and warped designs give products a fluid quality elevating functional items into decorative centerpieces. Graphically contemporary, sometimes minimalistic in their details, whimsical items are eye-catching art that also has a purpose.

My favorite way to add it to a room:

These more wild additions to a room can build up, so always remember: balance. Pick out a whimsical chair, a wild sofa print, an unusual rug shape, or even wallpaper, but always make sure there are subtler, more relaxed pieces to balance out the flare of uniqueness. That way patterns don’t become overwhelming and make your room look smaller or crowded!

3. Nature Inspiration Trend

Another trend this year is nature. Bring the outdoors in, by adding some real plants and creating what’s called a biophilic home. Gone are the days of a fake plant growing dusty on a side table. Place a full bamboo palm in the corner of your living room!

Or you can add items that reflect the organic flow and shapes of nature. If you’re lacking a green thumb, you can still find coffee tables, vases, plates, chairs, mirrors, doorknobs, and side tables that echo the forms and color palette of nature.

My favorite way to add it to a room:

Dedicate a shelf to a low-light loving plant, or fill the void between your sofa and chair with an indoor tree or snake plant. Add a jute rug, and keep your room’s color palette neutral with cozy browns (wink, wink) and leafy greens.

4. Lighting Trend

A few different trends are starting to pop up in the world of lighting. A light feature is a great way to add something a little different to a room without taking up too much space. Four main trends are big this year: Metallic & Marble, Subtle & Gentle, Architectural Chandeliers, and Art Deco. You can have fun with these concepts, searching for vintage or finding new designs that either melt into the décor or make a statement.

My favorite way to add it to a room:

Choose a large-and-in-charge statement chandelier to create a fabulous focal point. Also try adding dimmable wall sconces to create varying levels of light for softer mood lighting.
